Don't flush again. Every flush adds a cistern of water to a pan that has nowhere to send it.

Stop it refilling. Look for the small valve on the pipe into the cistern, usually a slot you turn a quarter turn with a coin or flat screwdriver. If there isn't one, turn your main stop tap off, usually under the kitchen sink, clockwise.

If it's about to overflow, bail some water out of the pan into a bucket. Gloves.

Don't pour chemicals in. They don't clear a toilet blockage and they make the job harder and less safe for whoever puts their arm in next.

Other drains backing up too? Sink, bath and toilet all slow, or a gurgle when the neighbours flush: that's beyond your toilet. See "Tower blocks" below.

Is it tonight, or tomorrow?
Tonight if it's your only toilet, if it's overflowing, or if sewage is coming up anywhere.
Tomorrow if you have a second toilet that works and the blocked one isn't overflowing. A daytime plumber will be cheaper and we'll tell you that on the phone rather than send someone.
Tower blocks and shared stacks
In a block, every flat's toilet joins a shared vertical pipe, the stack. If your toilet backs up on its own, or gurgles when the flat above flushes, the blockage may be in the stack, not your pan. That is the building's pipe and the building's contractor. Ring the concierge or managing agent's 24-hour line first: in a managed block they usually have a drainage contract and it may cost you nothing. If they can't come tonight, we can still make your bathroom usable and document that the fault is in the stack.
What NightPlumber does tonight
A named plumber comes with the tools for internal blockages: toilets, sinks, baths and internal waste pipes. We clear it where it can be cleared from inside the home, get the toilet working, and make the bathroom safe and clean enough to use until morning. We photograph the cause. If the blockage is in a shared stack or an external drain, we say so and give you the evidence for the building. We don't jet external drains at night.

What we do at night, and what we don't
Tonight (8pm–8am)
Burst pipes and leaks. Blocked toilets, sinks and internal drains. Overflows and ball valves. Stopcocks that won't turn. No water. We find it, quote the fix on your phone, and with your yes stop the water and make safe. Callout first, work priced before it starts.
Tomorrow (quoted tonight, done by day)
Repairs beyond making safe: replacing the pipe, the tap, the cistern, the flexi. We photograph it, quote a fixed price on your phone, and you decide in daylight. Get a second opinion if you like.
Never at night
Gas and boilers. If you have no hot water or heating, we make the plumbing safe tonight and book a Gas Safe registered engineer for 8am. We never work on gas. External drain jetting. Anything outside E1, E2, E3, E8, E9 and E14.
